Musical Interpretations

by

I love how people can use their own creativity and make something new. There are many famous musicals like “West Side Story” that are hard to change. People fall in love with the show and it is pretty much done the same way every time. Now it is being revived on broadway and word has it that the Sharks are going to speak in Spanish the entire time. I love it! It’s not easy making big changes with musicals like that. It is a leap of faith.
I did something like that once. It was not such a huge deal to others, but I had fun making two songs from two different musicals blend into one another. The song began with “Pick-A-Little” from Music Man and went into “Cain’t Say No” from Oklahoma. The flowed into each other perfectly. It was such a small thing, but it was fun to play with the music like that.
The same piece of music is often re-created to fit into different genres. P Diddy did it with “Every Step I Take,” … there was even a song from the musical, “Annie,” that became a very popular rap song at one point in time. I love it when people take music and allow themselves to be extra creative and do something that could very possibly fail. But hey, I think it is worth the risk. The journey is just as fun if not better than the destination.
