Following the dream
This should be easy for you if you are pursuing the life of a performer. If it is your dream, it may become difficult at times, but will stick with what you are doing. In reality, how is this career easy? In many ways, there are more negatives rather than positives. It is important to love what you are doing. You may have heard this a million times, but seriously, if you see yourself doing anything else, do it. In this field, you deal with daily rejection and criticism. It takes extra effort to constantly check-in with yourself and make sure you provide the constant positive feedback you need.
Once, I went into an audition for Chicago. They were specifically looking for a girl to play the role of Velma. I knew this was a perfect role for me. I made it past the dance audition and then was asked to sing. I came in with “McCavity” from Cats. Bad choice. I did not know it was a bad choice until after I sang it. I was already beating myself up … then a person from the room came out and called my name. I was hoping I was wrong about my bad choice and they wanted to hear more or something. “What were you thinking,” was what the casting director had to say. It only made me feel worse. I laughed it off and swore to fix my audition songbook afterwards.
Did this discourage me? Absolutely not. Instead, it got me to be more motivated and improve my audition techniques. This could have been taken completely differently. But my passion and desire to make it in the business cannot be stopped.
Is it the same for you?
